Giving is an expression of our faith in God as our sole provider and creator. As Christians, we are encouraged to return ten percent of God's provision into his storehouse, the church, to further his redemptive work for humanity (Mal 3.10).
Make no mistake, God doesn't need our money, he wants our hearts. Giving helps us to reflect God's heart of generosity and keeps our eyes open to the plight of others. Through giving, we come to understand that man shall not live by money alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. We place our hope on the promises of God that he will never leave us, never forsake us (Deut 31.8) and that we shall not lack any good thing (Psa 34.10).
